The 70th sports personality of the year will be held on December 19

The 2023 BBC Sports Personality of the Year will take place at MediaCityUK in Salford on Tuesday 19 December.

Gabby Logan, Alex Scott, Gary Linker and Clare Balding will present the show live on BBC One from 19:00 GMT.

This year’s show will mark the 70th annual awards ceremony, first held in 1954.

England celebrates 12 months of sporting events, including the FIFA Women’s World Cup final and Manchester City’s treble.

The year Europe won the Ryder Cup and retained the Solheim Cup brought South Africa a successful Rugby World Cup title in 2023, while Australia won the men’s cricket World Cup.

England and Arsenal forward Beth Mead was named the 2022 Sports Personality of the Year. The Lions won after being named the tournament’s best player and top scorer at Euro 2022.

Barbara Slater, director of BBC Sport, said: “I’m very proud of the vital role BBC Sport has played in delivering a fantastic and exciting year of sport on TV, radio and online – there will be much to celebrate on the night.

“What makes this year’s awards even more special is that we are celebrating 70 years of the program. Over the past seven decades, the community has decided who the sports heroes are, from the grassroots to the professional level.

The 2023 categories include: BBC Sports Personality of the Year; World Sports Star of the Year; The Helen Rollason Award; Young Sports Personality of the Year; The Unsung Hero; Coach of the Year; Team of the Year: and a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The nominees for the 2023 Sportsperson of the Year Award will be announced in due course. Viewers at home can vote for their winner on the night of the show.

Tickets to participate in the event will be available to the public from Monday BBC shows and tours.
