Arthur Smith: We needed a win in the worst way

Sunday’s loss to the Saints may not have ended the Falcons’ season, but it probably didn’t feel that way to many people in Atlanta.

The Colts lost four of their last five games and benched quarterback Desmond Reeder before returning to the playoffs in Week 12. If they stumble again, they will fall to 4-7. During the season, the changes that the organization needs to make begin to cry out.

Head coach Arthur Smith’s future will be central to such discussions, so it’s no surprise they were as relieved as anyone by Sunday’s 24-15 win. The win ended the losing streak and also moved the Falcons into first place in the NFC South.

“There is only one game, but we want to win that one The worst way” Smith said, via ESPN.com’s Michael Rothstein.

At 5-6, the Falcons aren’t far from the same odds they’d face with a loss to the Saints, so no one in Atlanta should feel too complacent. Next week’s road trip to face the Jets begins the closing stretch with just one winning team, but the Falcons righted the ship at the right time.
