Everyone had left Shelby WAC Stadium on Nov. 24 when Perry’s Owen McConnell stopped by for one last look before getting on the bus.

The Pirates finished 22-8 in the Division V state semifinals to end the program’s first state championship game bid. But McConnell couldn’t help but think of those who came before him.

Especially his grandfather, Bob Ritley, who put the Perry football team on the map before he died of cancer in 2003.

“Yeah, I definitely thought about it,” said McConnell, whose mother, Sue, is Bob Ritley’s daughter. “I know he’s proud of me now. Be proud of the US. But he is telling me that the work is not done yet. We have a state title to bring home to Perry.
