Bill Belichick “can’t remember” when he informed Mac Jones he’d start at QB

The Patriots lost to the Warriors 10-7 on Sunday, so there was no off-week magic by head coach Bill Belichick to get the team back on track after a 2-8 start to the season.

Belichick made an in-game change at quarterback when he pulled Mack Jones for Bailey Zappen after throwing two touchdowns in the first half. Zapp threw another and Belichick bemoaned the team’s poor ball security several times in his postgame press conference.

The team did not say who would start at quarterback in the days leading up to the game, and Zappé said last Friday that he had not told the players about the selection. Tight end Hunter Henry told reporters after the game that he knew Jones would start Sunday, but Belichick let the quarterback know before he left for New Jersey during the press conference.

“I don’t remember. “Sometimes during the week,” Belichick said.

Jones and Zappé split reps with the first team at practice this week, and Belichick said he thinks both players “deserve to play” when discussing his approach this week. He declined to say anything about who will start against the Chargers in Week 13, but it doesn’t look like either pick will make much of a difference in a lost season for New England.
