Nadine Juko, a Cameroonian immigrant, cut costs in her shop and started using two stylists for each customer, which greatly reduced weaving time.

One customer was so pleased with the results, she showed off her shiro on TikTok, noting the affordable price and her short time in the chair.

“We did her hair and the next day my phone rang 200 times. I counted… I got 200 phone calls. I’ve never had 50 calls in a day since I opened my business. That day, I received 200 calls and [saying,] ‘I want TikTok special’ Juiko, a mother of five, asked, ‘What is special about TikTok?’ I said.

“He blew [up]there were a million views in one day and it changed my life for the better,” said Djuiko.

Her innovation of using two or more stylists for each client has cut hair braiding visits from six to eight hours to about two and a half hours. Faster, better, cheaper hair strands caught on and people were coming to her shop from far and wide.

“I have people coming from New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina. I don’t know if they are coming because they have other things to do here,” said Djuiko. But some people have told me that they drive back just to get their hair done.

She expanded the hours of the store at 13631 Old Annapolis Road and expanded the weaving business from one to three storefronts.

“I’m thinking of making it better. The issue we have now is the space…we need a bigger space. I hope to get a place in Bowie Hall, where I can get at least 100 to 150 seats,” Juco said.

Hairdressing shop hours used to be 8am to 5pm but not anymore.

“We started getting customers who wanted to come at 5 in the morning, then it went from 5 in the morning to 4 in the morning and now people are coming in at 3 in the morning… officially we say it’s 4 in the morning but the reality is that it’s 3 in the morning because there are customers. At 3 in the morning in the parking lot. In,” said Djuiko.
