College Football Top 25: Conference Championship Weekend

0 20

There’s no doubt that The Big Game and Rivalry Weekend as a whole lived up to the hype. Michigan and Ohio State fought back in the final minutes before the Wolverines prevailed, Alabama received divine intervention to claim victory in the Iron Bowl, and the Washington Huskies survived a brutal four-game stretch to close out the regular season and remain perfect. .

All of the conference championship games this weekend and in some cases it’s the last thing to do for the College Football Playoff Committee.

To that end, the path to the playoff is clear for Georgia, Michigan and Washington. Win your conference championship this weekend and you’ll be in the playoffs. It’s even less of a straight line for Florida State and Oregon and more so for Alabama and Texas and Ohio State.

And there’s the matter of deciding who will take the stage in New York City and who will take home the Heisman Trophy. That will be decided this weekend.

In all of this there are many opportunities to gain value from potential bets. Join the college football betting discussion Friday at 11AM ET. From the sideline to the pitch to the prop, get ready for college football this weekend NBC Sports College Football Betting Q&A.

Although not as much as in previous weeks, Rivalry made a slight move in the NBC Sports Top 25 over the weekend.

Von Dalzell (@VmoneySports): The College Football Playoff will be one to remember because the top seven seeds all have legitimate chances to make the four-team playoff. For Alabama, Oregon, Florida State and Washington, they could win out and get in. The reliable home teams are Georgia and Michigan. If Washington and Florida State win, but Georgia loses to Alabama, we all have a decision between Florida State and Alabama as the No. 4 seed. This can be chaotic.

Eric Froton (@CFFroton): It all comes down to this weekend when Michigan looks to be the only real lock to make the College Football Playoff. Oregon and Washington will square off in the Pac-12 title game, with the winner almost certain to receive an invitation. Florida State is trying to stay in the playoff picture. The Noles opened as 4.5-point favorites in the ACC Championship, but that number has dropped to 2.5 as the Sharps don’t believe in FSU. Maybe the Seminoles have secured a spot if they win big against Louisville. An Alabama vs. Georgia result would clear the playoff picture with a UGA win, or muddy the waters with an Alabama win, creating a major upset.

Next: Saturday vs. #2 Michigan (12-0) | Spread: Wolverines -23.5 | O/U: 35.5

Dalzell: Texas has the longest shot of any of the top seven seeds to make the postseason with its lone loss against Oklahoma in the final seconds. The Longhorns’ resume is legit and their case for the playoffs is strong. If Alabama beats Georgia, however, the Longhorns’ win against the Tide will spell trouble and Texas could miss the College Football Playoff. The only way Texas can make it is if Georgia beats Alabama, Michigan beats Iowa, Washington beats Oregon and Florida State, plus Alabama loses both. Texas will then have a case for No. 4 against a two-loss Oregon team and a one-loss Florida State team.

Fraughton: Texas has what looks to be the easiest of five matchups against a 14.5-point, realistic, but underpowered, Oklahoma State team. However, in a tight contest where style points count, the Longhorns would have benefited from avenging their lone loss to Oklahoma, but Oklahoma State pulled off an impressive double-OT victory over BYU to eliminate that opportunity. An Iowa win would send the Hawkeyes to a New Year’s Six bowl game, but that’s highly unlikely given their offensive weakness and Michigan’s defensive prowess.

Dropped from the top 25: Kansas State

Dalzell: I think it’s worth noting that two weeks ago Oregon State was ranked No. 10 and No. 11 in our polls, but back-to-back losses put the Beavers out of the Pac-12 Championship race. With three of the four losses coming by a total of eight points, Oregon State will be the favored team in bowl games.

Fraughton: Tulane has a good chance playing an SMU team that lost star QB Preston Stone to an injury last weekend against Navy and is already without its top two running backs, Jaylen Knighton and LJ Johnson. A win should secure the Green Waves’ spot in the New Year’s Six bowl. Liberty, JMU and Toledo round out the G5 schools in the top 25. Congratulations to JMU on their first year as an FBS program.
