The process has changed with the likes of Collection Pot, Giftround and Thankbox – online platforms that have become an office utility after the epidemic of remote working made the nightmare of in-person collections.

“The popularity of a service like ours has skyrocketed,” says Ellie Andrews, founder of Ving, a London-based site founded in 2015.

Among its clients it counts banks, universities, accountants and media groups, as well as the office staff of a Premier League football club. And Andrew confirmed that users tend to gather “heavily” rather than having colleagues at their desks and hoping each has enough change in hand.

However, my friend’s colleague who received more than 550 pounds seems to be lucky.

The average Ving collection is around £100, with one user adding that he was “amazed” when he collected £200 instead of the £10 he normally collects in the post.

Andrew doesn’t hear that junior staff are upset about the amount of money going to more senior staff. But she pointed out that seniors had many connections within an organization, so the pool of contributions was large.

This makes sense. And it’s true that there’s nothing new about whiplash.

In the year In 2010, a disgruntled employee wrote on an online forum for car enthusiasts that when he was working at a company trying to arrange a package for someone going abroad, “I told them to spend xxxx,” adding, “Guy went to New Zealand and nearly doubled his salary.”
