0 21

Times are tough for college football teams still hoping to secure bids in their respective conference championship games. As it turns out, though, there are a lot of opportunities out there. Entering the final full Saturday in 2023, seven bowl games at the FBS level are not guaranteed. Some, like the Big Ten and Big 12, boast one team that has already qualified. .

Here’s a quick look at all of the conference championship matchups that have already been decided with ET.

  • ACC: Florida State vs. Louisville — Saturday, Dec. 2, 8 p.m
  • Pac-12: Washington at Oregon — Friday, Dec. 1, 8 p.m
  • Sec. Georgia (East) vs. Alabama (West) — Saturday, Dec. 2, 4 p.m. on CBS
  • Conference America: Liberty at New Mexico State — Friday, Dec. 1, 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network
  • Mac: Miami-Ohio (East) vs. Toledo (West) — Saturday, Dec. 2, 12 p.m.

Now, let’s take a look at all the scenarios that could play out in each of the open conference races.

Big 12

Texas clinched its first Big 12 Championship Game berth with a 57-7 win over Texas Tech on Friday night. The Longhorns will face Oklahoma State.

Oklahoma is still on a run and successfully eliminated Kansas State with a win over TCU on Friday. If Oklahoma and Oklahoma State finish with the same conference records, the Pox will get the edge since they picked up a win in Bedlam a few weeks ago.

So that means Oklahoma is rooting hard for BYU on Saturday. With an Oklahoma State loss, the Big 12 title game features a rematch of the Red River rivalry.

Big Ten

Iowa has its second Big Ten Championship game shutout in the last three years. The Hawkeyes earned a spot in Week 12 with a 15-13 win over Illinois, a Big Ten West contender after an injury-plagued season and a heated coaching controversy.

Iowa’s opponent will be determined Saturday when Michigan and Ohio State battle for the Big Ten East title. This will be the third straight season the Wolverines and Buckeyes will play for a chance at the Big Ten title game and possibly the College Football Playoff.

Tulane defeated UTSA 29-16 on Friday to advance to the American Athletic Conference championship game. The second team is still undecided, though SMU could claim a spot in the regular-season finale by knocking off Navy. Roadrunners aren’t out of business just yet.

If SMU loses, that’s where things get even more complicated. That means SMU and UTSA are 7-1 in conference play without a head-to-head matchup, so the AAC will use the average of selected computer rankings to determine second place.

Mountain West

If UNLV can beat San Jose State, it will host the Mountain West Championship Game. The Rebels will play Boise State after the Broncos beat Air Force 27-19 on Friday.

If San Jose State beats UNLV, that would create a three-way tie between those teams and Boise State. In that case, participants in the Mountain West Championship Game will be determined by computer rankings – just like the American Athletic Conference.

Sun belt

The Sun Belt is one of the few congregations that still uses divisions. Troy wins the Sun Belt West with a 6-1 conference record, so it already has a spot in the title game. And although James Madison has a 10-1 overall record and a 6-1 Sun Belt showing, it can’t participate in the conference championship due to NCAA rules, the Dukes will play a big role in how the Sun Belt East plays.

The game against Coastal Carolina on Saturday could decide everything. Coastal Carolina could win the East by defeating James Madison. If Appalachian State loses to Georgia Southern, the Chantillyers will qualify for the Sun Belt Championship Game. If James Madison defeats Coastal Carolina, that leaves the door open for Appalachian State to win the Eastern Conference with a win over Georgia Southern.
