Shawn Lewis, the former offensive coordinator at Colorado under Sanders, has been hired as San Diego State’s head coach, a person close to the matter confirmed to USA TODAY Sports. The person asked not to be named because they are not authorized to discuss it publicly. Lewis replaces Brady Hoke, who has retired.
Lewis, 37, previously served as the head coach at Kent State, leading a rushing offense that averaged 606.5 yards and 49.8 points per game in 2020. He will take those credentials to Colorado in 2023 to work under Sanders. But after a 3-0 start, the experience fizzled out.
What happened once under Deion Sanders?
In one sequence, USA TODAY Sports saw Sanders’ quarterback Schwier express his displeasure with Lewis after he was sacked in the second quarter. 28-16 loss at UCLA on Oct. 28. “We’re not disrespecting Sean Lewis,” Dion Sanders said after making the switch. “We don’t do that. We will not take that vote. Shane is a good guy. I think he’s a good play caller. We just need a change at the moment. At the time, we had to try something else. And that’s what we did.”
At San Diego State, Lewis will take over a team that finished 4-8 this season in his second year playing at the new stadium in Mission Valley. A former player at Wisconsin, the Aztecs are expected to deliver the kind of high-flying scoring offense that fills stadium seats and regularly goes to bowl games, as the Aztecs have done in 12 of the past 13 seasons.
Lewis made $850,000 this season at Colorado in the first year of a three-year, $2.7 million contract, but is allowed to opt out of the contract without paying damages if he lands an NCAA or NFL head coaching position.
He is the second employee to leave Colorado at the end of the season last week. Former tight ends coach Tim Brewster announced on social media that Sanders was “a truly amazing person and leader” resigning. After Sanders changed play callers, Brewster was demoted to make room for Schumer under the limit of 10 full-time assistant coaches.
