Seth Buckman, captain of the Flathead Valley Community College logger sports team, accepts the Montana Athletes in Service Award from the Montana Campus Compact during the recent 122nd Wildcats-Wild Grizzlies football game in Missoula.

The award honors student-athletes who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and involvement in community service while positively impacting their local communities.

Anne Bell, consultant to Logger Sports Group, nominated Bookman for the award.

“A woman is a perfect example of someone who is more focused than himself,” he said. “He leads by example and takes everyone with him. His approach to life, his relationship with his colleagues and the community, inspires others to get involved and make a difference in the immediate community, but we hope to continue participating in civic activities for the rest of their lives.”

Buckman volunteers with Underwater Soldier, a nonprofit that provides scuba diving therapy to physically and mentally disabled veterans and first responders. He is a volunteer panel member for Crisis Intervention Training (CIT). Twice a year, the Flathead Valley Sheriff’s Office hosts CIT training, where Buckman speaks on topics related to veterans suffering from combat trauma and PTSD.

“I am honored to be recognized. Helping others has become second nature to me. I will continue to be an advocate of selfless service and support my community wherever help is needed. I am driven to serve where I can because I want to help future generations succeed in their own careers. “I don’t know where this path will lead me, but I hope that my efforts will allow me to do great things,” says Buckman. I believe we are the leaders we have been waiting for, and it is up to us to do what we can to help change the world for the better one day.

The team competed in its first tournament of the season at the University of Idaho Lumberjack Classic in Moscow, Idaho. A record number of approximately 150 competitors from seven different schools participated in the fall meet.

Four members of the FVCC team demonstrated their skills in an impressive field, winning individual awards in various categories.

Buckman took first in the javelin throw and sixth in the doubles and pole vault. Mistaya Ryman placed first in horizontal speed chop, second in vertical speed chop, third in caber toss, sixth in pulp toss, and fourth for Belle of the Woods. David Wickwire took second in the Horizontal Hardite Chop and sixth in the Double Silver. New team member Caleb Speed competed in pole vault and pole vault.

The entire team took home valuable competition experience and things to focus on during practice in preparation for the upcoming fall season.
