ROANOKE, Va. (WDJ) – The giant inflatable Frosty at Hunting Hills Mall is… Sweet Providence Farm Tree Lot Open for business in Roanoke. Chris Shockley has been working for Sweet Providence Farms for three years. It helps to gather trees.

“The trees are not from Sweet Providence Farm. They come from farms everywhere. Christiansburg and Floyd have a variety of family farms that we pull from. A good growth year, [the trees] They usually grow about a foot a year. But if there is a drought or if there is a problem of harvesting or if there is a lack of sun, it will decrease for any reason [the growth] Almost to zero,” explains Chris.

Even though we are in a drought, Chris says this year’s crop is good. They have crews working daily to collect trees and bring them to the tree lot. There are many species to choose from, so once you find the right tree, shake it to remove any debris, then bring it to the sawmill.

“When the trees are harvested, sap comes from the trunk and closes the end [of the trunk], which prevents the water from evaporating prematurely. So, we cut off some of the lower legs and cut them clean at the end so that they can drink water.

The tree passes through a baler where it is wrapped in net paper. They will even take the tree to your car and tie it for you. Also, if you need wreaths, they have those too.

“I just love my job. People come in and know what they want. It’s easy to be in a good mood all the time,” Chris said.

The Sweet Providence Farm Tree Lot is located in the Hunting Hills Shopping Plaza at 4210 Franklin Road SW, Roanoke. It’s open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. If you want to cut your own tree, you can head out to their Cut & Select Farm located at 3313 Floyd Highway N in Floyd. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday 9am to 5pm.
