Hamas’s military wing announced on Sunday that the commander of its northern brigade, Ahmed al-Ghandor, and three other senior leaders had been killed in an Israeli attack on the Islamist movement.

In a statement issued by the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, Gandor was a member of the military council and named three other leaders who died, including Ayman Siam, who Israeli media said was the head of the Brigades’ rocket firing unit.

“We pledge to Allah that we may continue their path, and their blood will be a light for the Mujahideen, and a fire for the converts,” the statement said, without explaining when they were killed.

Ghandor — known as De Gurr Abu Anas — was blacklisted by the U.S. in 2017 as a “specially designated global terrorist.”

The US State Department said he was a member of Hamas’ Shura Council and Political Bureau.

Gandor was “involved in a number of terrorist activities,” he said. In 2006, two Israeli soldiers were killed and four wounded, including an attack on an Israeli military stronghold at the Kerem Shalom border crossing.

That attack led to the release of 1,027 Palestinian prisoners in 2011 and the hostage-taking of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who had been imprisoned for five years before being released by Hamas.

The announcement came on the third day of a four-day ceasefire in the Gaza war that began on October 7, when Hamas militants advanced into southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and abducting nearly 240, Israeli officials said.

Israel has responded to a bombing and ground campaign against Hamas that has killed nearly 15,000 people, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-led government in Gaza.

In the current deal, Hamas returned 26 Israeli hostages in two batches, and 78 Palestinian prisoners were released from Israeli custody.
