Hero World Challenge provides Justin Thomas chance to improve ’24 status

NASSAU, Bahamas – At least one player in the 20-man field of the Hero World Challenge, the “Silly Season” event, has some serious problems.

Justin Thomas is playing the Tiger Woods tournament for the sixth time. But unlike his first five starts, the 30-year-old will need a strong week in Albany to help pave the way for better things in 2024.

Thomas endured his worst year in the 23rd season and turned 71St On the final FedExCup points list. Starting next season, the top 50 from the previous year’s points list will qualify for all eight signature events.

Thomas’s option to enter such competitions is through the world rankings. The top 30 finishers in each signature event (excluding Sentry) qualify.

Thomas is currently ranked 27th.Th And the hero, an unofficial PGA Tour event that offers OWGR points, is his last chance to finish the ranking.

“is it [staying inside top 30] Definitely somewhere back in my mind. If I continue to make some progress and get better and better, I feel like that will all take care of itself,” Thomas said Tuesday in Albany.

Fortunately for Thomas, there are other routes to more lucrative events. The top 10 players from current FedExCup points (not otherwise qualified) will qualify for the Signature Event Monday. Among signature events, the top 5 players in points from each “swing” (eg the Sony Open, American Express and Farmers Insurance will be the first swing to qualify for Pebble Beach).

Each signature event will have four sponsor exemptions for Tour members.

“I’ve got to go out here and try to win golf tournaments and make as many birdies as I can and make as few bogeys as I can and have a lot of fun,” he said. “I don’t need to be here this week to see how many points this is or what I have to do to stay in the top 30 in the world, try to go here or there. If I just play good golf, everything takes care of itself.
