Indian-origin student in coma after assault in Australia

An Indian-origin student in Australia is in a medically induced coma after being assaulted. A suspect has been arrested and charged with a crime, media reports said.

The unidentified student is in his 20s. He is pursuing his Masters degree at the University of Tasmania.

The incident took place in On November 5 at a farm in Tasmania, the victim suffered “an extra jugular bleed” that caused brain damage, the Sydney-based Special Broadcasting Service reported.

According to reports, his right lung collapsed and he underwent brain surgery, a process that took several hours.

Benjamin Dodge Collins, 25, of Lena Valley, was taken into custody shortly after the incident and charged with misdemeanor assault.

Collins has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear in court on December 4.
University of Tasmania media director Ben Wild said they are in regular contact with the family and have assigned an official to the case.
