The federal judge who oversees the election tampering case against Donald Trump in Washington, DC The former president has rejected efforts to request records From the House Select Committee that investigated the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.

Trump’s lawyers said in their filing that they withheld some materials from the committee, chairman Benny Thompson and other committee and federal officials related to the investigation. Defense attorneys also argued that special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into Trump had “significant overlap” with the House Select Committee’s investigation.

As the case nears trial in March, Judge Tanya Chutkan is still considering several pretrial motions from the Trump team, including long shots at dismissing the entire case. Trump has pleaded not guilty to efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Thompson defended the panel’s filing process. This summer, Rep. Barry Loudermilk, who is currently overseeing a Republican investigation into the committee’s work, said he would not be required to release all the records the committee gathered during his months-long investigation in response to allegations. .

In Monday’s ruling, Chutkan said Trump had not sufficiently substantiated his subpoena request and had not established a connection between the case and some of the material he sought to subpoena, including taped interviews. The order also states that some of the requested items were found and provided to the Trump team.

Chutkan also likened Trump’s subpoena request to a “fishing trip” and pointed out that he was not specific about some of the information he was seeking.

“Defendant’s vague description of the broad scope of the records he seeks and the extent to which they may be relevant amounts to less than a good faith effort to obtain known evidence,” Chutkan wrote.

CNN’s Annie Grayer contributed to this report.
