BOARDMAN – Catherine “Kitty” Louise Emerick Mattei passed away peacefully at Hospice of the Valley on Friday, November 17, 2023, surrounded by loved ones.

Kitty Howard and Ruth Dunkerley Emerick was born July 10, 1936 in Washington, Pennsylvania. Kitty moved to the Youngstown area in 1957 from western Pennsylvania.

Kitty attended Lincoln High School in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1956. She attended Mount Union College in Alliance and Youngstown State University, graduating in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science degree. She then earned a master’s degree in elementary administration and supervision from Youngston State University. She took additional coursework at Ashland, Western Michigan and Youngstown State Universities.

She was a teacher in Boardman Area Schools for 31 years, teaching at Stadium Drive Elementary and Center Middle Schools before retiring in 1996.

During her career, Kitty was an accomplished teacher. She is a member of the BEA Representative Council, Mahoning County Education Association, Ohio Education Association, National Education Association, International Reading Association, National Association of Teachers of English and the Boardman PTA. She was also a life member of both the Mahoning Retired Teachers Association and the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. She was a tutor for learning disabled students.

Kitty was an active member of Boardman Methodist Church for 66 years, serving on the board of trustees, board of trustees, Sunday school and confirmation teacher, teaching youth in the children’s club program, and serving on various church committees. Parish Relations and Membership Committees. She was also a member of the Mahoning Valley District Church Relations Committee.

Kitty enjoyed traveling abroad to the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and especially spending time with her family in Sista Key, Florida. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and attending their sporting events over the years. Kitty enjoyed friends and many trips to Myrtle Beach with the “M&M” Girls, Bunco Club, Couples Club, Card Club and monthly luncheons with the Walnut Grove Condominium Association. She was an avid reader and enjoyed many walks in Boardman Park.

Kitty is survived by her daughter, Becky (Stephen) Berry of Boardman; her two sons, Stephen (Julie) of Birmingham, Alabama and Douglas (Jean) of Copley; daughter-in-law, Lori Mathey of Talmadge; and seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Stuart) Spruell, Benjamin (Ashley) Mathie, Samuel Mathie, Kathleen (CJ) Hastings, Travis (Hannah) Mathie, Maia Mathie and John “Jack” Mathie; and great-grandsons, Landon and Ryan Rae Mattie. Kitty also leaves behind her sister, Marilyn Bland of Canton, Georgia.

In the year In addition to her husband of 42 years, John Mathie, who passed away in 1998, she was preceded in death by her parents. and son, David Mattie; sister, Elizabeth Ann Lohr; and grandson, Michael Berry.

Friends received noon to Fri., Dec. 1, 2023 with calling at 1:45 pm at Davis Baker Funeral Home in Boardman, followed by a funeral service at 2 pm officiated by Pastor Alison Labrun. She will be buried with her husband in Lake Park Cemetery.

In Kitty’s memory, memorial contributions may be made to the Boardman Methodist Church, 6809 Market St., Boardman, OH 44512.
