ST. Petersburg, Fla. – A new, thriving business district could be coming to south Pinellas County if a group of business owners and community leaders have their way.
Many business owners in South St. Petersburg and Gulfport want to turn 49th Street South into a vibrant area for business.
The collaborative project involves residents, local officials and planning efforts from St. Petersburg and Gulfport.
Leaders hope the district will provide opportunities for investment and beautification projects along 49th Street South from 2nd Avenue South to Boca Ciega Bay.
“We didn’t know this Gulfport-St. Pete’s Divide — and the Yellow Line going down 49th Street made sense to anyone,” said Tim Church, owner of Ice House Recording Studio. “And what we’ve been excited about is how willing people are to work together and say, OK, let’s forget that Yellow Line. We’re all about this corridor. Let’s make it from that line to the water, something good for everyone to enjoy.
The business owners group has the support of city leaders in both Gulfport and St. Petersburg. They asked the community to give their input and weigh in on what the business district should be called.
