NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Before turning to Cyber ​​Monday digital window shopping, thousands took to their favorite neighborhood spots to browse this year’s hottest gifts.

Small business boosted sales in New Orleans on Saturday as store owners said they were desperate.

“We’re all still trying to get out of that scene,” says Georgia Wilson at The Bead Shop.

Wilson says a little goes a long way.

If you have a guest in town and you walk down that street and say, ‘Oh, I can take you to that store,’ or ‘I like this restaurant. I go there all the time, if you don’t continue to support those places, the little places that you love won’t exist anymore,” Wilson said. “You can love them, but you can help them financially.”

Next door to Home Malone, Savannah Phillips sells Christmas spirit with a New Orleans feel.

“Our jewelry department was really big. We have poinsettia decorations made out of crawfish and magnolias gar fish scales,” Phillips said. “These are people who love their art and love their craft. I don’t think you see that at many big brand box offices.

The National Retail Federation predicts more than 65 million shoppers will open their wallets for small business Saturday.

Diane Lundeen of Petcetera said she welcomed a steady crowd to her store, but not everyone bought.

But despite fewer sales, Lundin said the increase in footfall at the longtime pet store is making a difference.

“I think we made a lot of wonderful connections and had a lot of fun with the people who came to visit us,” Lundin said.

Those were the feel-good in-person tours that cost less.

“We push a lot online. But the truth is online doesn’t make you feel good. When you walk in the door and ask how your kids are doing, they don’t recognize your name online.” “They’re not donating to your kids’ school fundraiser,” Wilson said.
