Nicollet kicks off Hometown Holiday, promoting Small Business Saturday

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) – Kicking off the holiday season with a mix of small business Saturday was a hometown holiday event.

The Nicollet County Chamber of Commerce and the Nicollet American Legion Post 510 began planning in September to bring in the holiday season and celebrate Small Business Saturday.

“There was an instant rush, which was great to see,” said Kimberly Salisbury, board member of the Nicollet Chamber of Commerce. “Almost everyone seemed to have some support, so that was great. Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, as usual, had a hit; And we were really excited to see all the little ones come and pick it up. [their] A chance to talk to Santa.”

The purpose of this free event is to support small business owners in the community.

Community members and children enjoyed Santa and Mrs. Claus, hot chocolate, cookie decorating and ornament picking.

“Well, there are a lot of small businesses that operate out of their homes and this gives them an opportunity to put on a display and let people know what’s available in their homes,” said Nicollet President Linda Wills. American Legion Post 510. “So this is a great opportunity to set a table for them, and tell us all about their small businesses.”

There were 24 vendors, each with different items such as meat. Compart DurocAlso handmade jewelry, wooden and hand towels.

“There’s a lot of different things for people to do, hobbies to sell, and it’s a great time for Christmas,” said business owner and Hometown Holiday participant Jim Compart. “So Nicollet has always been a very progressive small town. We have a very active Chamber and Lions Club, and they do a lot for the community.

Small Business Saturday started 13 years ago with an American Express campaign.
