The Patriots released five players Monday, including former Purdue quarterback Austin Burton. The team re-signed Will Grier to the practice squad on Tuesday, according to multiple reports.

The Patriots released Grier’s active roster document on May 7, 2010, and are expected to explore their options before returning.

The team doesn’t seem to have a plan in place, coach Bill Belichick said several times last week, saying every quarterback is ready to play. Grier did not last the week.

The Patriots then did what they’ve done all season — start Mack Jones — but Jones and Bailey Zappé each got similar snaps. Jones played 35 and Zappé 33.

Belichick hasn’t announced who will start in Week 13, it doesn’t really matter. They go into the offseason looking for a new quarterback.

The Patriots signed Grier off the Bengals’ practice squad in September, but he hasn’t appeared in a game for the club.
