Russia lists Meta as a “terrorist and extremist” organization.


Russia has placed Meta Platforms spokesman Andy Stone on its wanted list.

Russia has severely curtailed media and social media freedoms since launching its invasion of Ukraine last year and stifling criticism.

Stone is listed on the Russian Interior Ministry’s wanted list without further details.

In the year In October 2022, Russia listed Meta as a “terrorist and extremist” organization, opening up criminal investigations and penalties for potential users in the country.

Facebook and Instagram have been blocked in Russia since the start of the Ukraine attack and are only available via VPN.

X (formerly Twitter) was also banned, as were Russian independent media critical of the Kremlin.

Before the ban, millions of Russians used Meta apps, particularly Instagram, which was popular among young Russians.
