Staying on the hardwood, we continue our preview of local high school basketball teams with a stop in Sackets Harbor to check out the Lady Patriots, a team looking to make big strides this season.

Coach Sean Haley’s team finished 3-8 in the Frontier League Division D in 2022-23 and 6-14 overall, losing to Copenhagen in the opening round of the Section 3 Class D playoffs.

With the top 3 scorers from last year’s team returning and another year of experience, Haley likes the prospects of this year’s team.

I am very pleased with this year’s team. They’re playing really hard right now. We are returning a few kids, some of whom have 3 years of experience. This will be a 4 year experience for the now 4 children. We’re raising kids that will help us have a depth that we haven’t had in a while. I’m excited,” Haley said.

The players feel that the strength of this year’s team is based on how long they have been playing together, and that this team is balanced both offensively and defensively.

“I think our offense is really impressive this year. We have a lot of strong shooters and some good post players,” Emily Curley said.

“Our experience. We have two players who are playing their 4th year and I think last year’s experience in particular will help us this year,” Lily Green said.

I feel our strength will definitely be everything. We have to do a little better defensively, but it’s definitely getting there,” Peyton Britton said.

So what must the Our Lady’s Patriots do to have a successful season this year? According to Haley, the formula is simple.

“We have to defend the basketball and we have to rebound,” Haley said.

The Lady Patriots open their season on Dec. 5 when they play host to Copenhagen.

On the ice, Clarkson hosts Syracuse in a non-league meeting at Chell Arena.

Brock McVeigh lights up the Golden Knights 1-0.

Julia Minotti made a big save on a breakaway in the second period.

Clarkson finally made it 3-0 Knights when Rebecca Morissette scored in the third.

Less than four minutes later, Anne Cherkowski tallied her second goal of the game: 4-0.

Lawrence Frenette blasted in for the final goal.: 5-0 Clarkson

The Golden Knights remain undefeated at 16-0-2, blanking Syracuse 5-0.
