Undergraduate students at the Coastal Studies Institute at East Carolina University’s Outer Banks Campus will share their research on how artificial lighting affects sea turtles and their communities.

their approach, Artificial Light at Night: Public Awareness, Sea Turtle Nesting, and Spatio-Temporal Change in North Carolina’s Outer Banks” is scheduled for Tuesday, December 12 at 6 p.m. on campus and should last approximately 90 minutes, including time for questions and discussion.

The presentation is a culmination of a semester-long, interdisciplinary residential learning experience for a local Outer Banks field site at North Carolina’s Chapel Hill Institute, Institute for Coastal Studies on ECU’s Outer Banks campus. Each fall since 2001, students spend a semester attending classes, interning with local organizations, and completing a capital research project as a team.

This year’s capstone study looks at artificial lighting on the Outer Banks at night, including changes over the past nine years, what Outer Banks residents and visitors think about artificial lighting at night, and how changes relate to sea turtle nesting patterns.

Attendees will have the opportunity to view posters about the students’ internship projects before the presentation and talk with the students about their experiences during the reception. Light refreshments will be served.

“Science in Voice” is a monthly in-person lecture series that brings together perspectives from across the state and highlights coastal topics in Northeast North Carolina.

There is no charge for public attendance. The program must be broadcast live on CSI YouTube Channel.
