Shop small on Small Business Saturday

Houghton, Mich. (WLUC) – Small business shoppers made their first stop Saturday at the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce for coupon books, a raffle and free coffee for Houghton shoppers. The goal of Small Business Saturday is to support local businesses.

Businesses in Houghton had special deals to celebrate. Cathy Schliff Buying locally is important to her because it brings success to the area.

“It’s important to me. Seeing all the smiling faces and everyone having success is the greatest thing. That’s one thing in this position, I’m here to support the community and whatever I can,” Schliff said.

Schliff said when you shop locally, it helps keep money in the local economy. Briana Palosaari, owner of Grace and Gather in Houghton, says local support is the reason her business is successful.

“I feel like if we didn’t have the support of the local community for this particular retail business. Retail is certainly not an easy business to break into, but we have a lot of interest and the local community is great. We are very grateful,” Palosari said.

Grace and Gazer had a store wide sale and coffee shop for shoppers to enjoy. Palosari also said her goal is to give her support back to the community.

“A big thing we’re focusing on is community involvement and just creating a culture of coming together by having more events,” Palosari said.

The Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce encourages people to shop locally year-round.
