BELLEVILLE, IL (KMOV) – Shoppers came out in droves Saturday to support local businesses for “Small Business Saturday.”

This year, Belleville’s Main Street will be filled with holiday cheer, including the annual Santa’s ParadeHeld on Friday and ongoing Christkindlemarket.

Launched more than a decade ago as part of an American Express advertising campaign, Small Business Saturday brings shoppers to local businesses that traditionally focus on big-box chains.

Christine Blancquart opened Blancquart Vintage Market a few years ago in the old Kiel Building on Main Street. The shop sells antiques, holiday decorations and antiques.

“We’re surrounded by a lot of small businesses that have been here a long time,” Blancquart said. “All the businesses and restaurants, we come together and we have this shared community.”

Blancquart said this is one of the busiest shopping days of the year for them, so they started setting up a vendor fair in the store. Shoppers say the quality of local shopping and the unique beauty of shopping on the high street is indescribable.

“It’s like a Hallmark movie,” said shopper Heather McKinney. “All stores, inside and out, great deals, great sales, ready for the holiday season.”
