SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – The weekend after Thanksgiving is typically the busiest shopping weekend of the year. In recent years, there has been a focus on encouraging local businesses to market locally.

Since 2010, Small Business Saturdays have encouraged people to shop locally during the holiday season. And right here in Sioux City, Downtown Partners created Small Business Bingo to highlight more than 20 local shops around town.

“It’s great for small businesses to work during the holidays,” says Graci Tangeman, an interior designer at MOD House Interiors. “Thanksgiving is perfect because it brings everyone back home and then everyone is here on Saturday to shop locally.”

A game of bingo sends people up and down downtown Sioux City to check out locally owned locations. And Hardline Coffee, which opened its doors on Small Business Saturday in 2018, helps get new businesses off the ground.

“It’s brought us a lot of traffic and increased awareness that we’re open,” said Hardline owner Nisa Salmon. “Since then, [Small Business Saturday] It was an anniversary party for us. It was great to open our doors to the public and welcome people.

And here in the holiday season, this weekend helps kick off the year-end sales.

“I feel like it’s definitely going to help us; we’re closed on Black Friday so that’s our biggest sales day that we see every season and it’s going to get people to see the other services that we offer,” Tangeman said.

“A lot of people start their Christmas shopping this weekend, and it usually lasts until the end of December and hopefully this year will be no different,” Salmon said.

If you want to join in on the fun and support local businesses, Downtown Partners will be holding their Small Business Bingo game every Saturday through December 16th.
