HONOLULU (Hawaii News Now) – It’s been a tough and slow year for many local businesses, but it was a busy and successful small business Saturday for retailers and restaurants in Kaimuki.

“It was a good time,” said Sachi McLachlan, owner of Little Ships Donut Company.

McLachlan managed to sell all 500 of their handmade donuts at the Keep it Kaimuki festival on Saturday.

Seeing the crowd was an inspiration for zero waste storage.

People have been urging them to support small businesses.

“We were really nervous because like every other month, this past month has been awfully slow like last year,” said Keep Simple owner Hunter Long. “We need a day like this, and this is it; we are very blessed and very happy to see it.

“I’m really confused right now, really.”

In the year Dozens of businesses, storefronts and pop-ups participated in the Keep it Kaimuki event, which started in 2017.

It’s focused on bringing the community together and is filled with music, family entertainment, and lots of deals from local businesses.

“I don’t know how we’re doing with our sales, but at least it was pretty cool to be able to tell stories with people and see the bodies move through our store and space,” said David DeLuca. “And it was great to have the opportunity to bring awareness to what’s going on in the community.”

“I’ve definitely seen hundreds of people coming in and out,” she said. “Our community in Hawaii is very welcoming, very aloha,” said Christa Bokobock of 28th Workshop. We all come together and help each other.

Keep Kaimuki has grown tremendously since its launch six years ago, attracting people from all over the island.

“There are so many unique small businesses around to support, and there are so many reasons to buy small even if it seems easier, more convenient, or more affordable to choose a corporate option,” Long said. “And I think having events is a great way to get to know your local store.”
