“Yes, I can confirm the information, unfortunately, it is true,” Andriy Yusov, an official of the GUR military intelligence agency, told the Reuters news agency.

Kirill Budanov’s wife, Mariana Budanova, was suffering from severe metal poisoning after the alleged assassination attempt and was being treated in hospital, according to reports. Kiev has opened an investigation into what it described as an “attempted assassination,” Reuters reported.

He said that the substances found in her body “are not used in normal life or military affairs and their presence may indicate a deliberate attempt at poisoning”.

He also said that “several” other GUR workers are being treated for suspected poisoning.

Marianna Budanova, an adviser to Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko, has reportedly been admitted to hospital after her illness worsened. Law enforcement officials believe the poisoning was administered through her food, so she has already received treatment.

Authorities said they foiled more than 10 assassination attempts on Kirill Budanov throughout his career. Kirill Budanov’s influential military intelligence unit is believed to be responsible for the sabotage attacks against Russia. Moscow accused GUR of being behind the October 2022 explosion on the Kerch bridge linking Russia with Crimea.

Previously, Kirill Budanov said that his wife lived with him in his “office” and since the beginning of the raid, she did not leave his side for security reasons.
