HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) – Many small businesses in our region had holiday deals on Cyber Monday.

Local business owners say the weekend of deals isn’t just something that ends on Black Friday or Small Business Saturday.

Joy McKenney, owner of Appalachian Apparel Co. in Hazard, said Cyber Monday is a great opportunity for people from anywhere in the country to show support for the area.

“Over the years, we’ve had customers in all 50 states and eight different countries,” he said.

McKenney added that he started the business online. Thanks to its growth and days like Cyber Monday, it has allowed customers near and far to thank them.

“We started as an online-only brand because of the response and support we received. We were able to grow. Open our storefront here downtown and be part of one of the fastest growing downtown developments. We were one of the first stores here,” McKenney said.

Coal Country Candles co-owner Shannon Gabbard said they are grateful for people who want to support Appalachian businesses.

“We also have a lot of customers who are from this area and have now moved or live in another region of Appalachia. They’re often looking for Appalachian-based companies and products. So we’re excited about redesigning our website last year and we’ve really seen an increase in traffic,” she said.

It allows people to shop online and in person locally.

“We appreciate each and every order and we do a lot to support schools, local charities and events in the community. It wouldn’t be possible without those purchases,” she said.

Plus, it gives people like the Gabbards a chance to give back to the community.
