‘We want to sustain’: SA businesses call on community for support on Small Business Saturday

San Antonio – Blended diets and gym drinks all follow very specific directions. But owner Natalie Zernick says there’s no recipe for running a business.

“It took us day by day,” Zernick said. “That’s our passion. That’s what we want to do.

Small Business Saturday comes around every year. It’s a day dedicated to building support for community-owned businesses and growing the local economy. And this year comes as Zernick’s business celebrates one year.

“We changed again and now a year later, we’re finally expanding,” Zernick said. “We’re getting there.”

Zernick As a small business owner, survival and building a brand is always top of mind. Small business Saturday It started in 2010. But he had the biggest push since the pandemic.

The 4Goodness Project Inc. Founder Erika Shimmura helped organize a pop-up event at Jefferson Bodega on Saturday for businesses without their own storefronts to strengthen small business sustainability.

“Accessibility and representation are everything,” Shimmura said. “These people have no fear in this pursuit. And I love them for that.

Dozens of vendors lined up in the backyard of the bodega Saturday night. Megan Made It owner Megan Davila said her goal was to get her name out there.

“I just love the crowd,” Davila said. “It’s great that we can support each other and be our own entrepreneurs.”

Shimamura said there is no competition between businesses.

“There’s a lot of talent in this town,” Shimamura said.

Small shopping can promote local art and build San Antonio’s economy, she said.

“We want to support,” Shimamura said. “They know exactly where their money is going. It goes right back to pouring into the community.”
