As of January 8, 2023, China has implemented Category B surveillance for Covid-19 infections.3 With the lifting of epidemic control measures, the entertainment media industry has seen a significant recovery.

According to data monitoring and analysis on the performance ticket data collection platform of the China Performing Arts Industry Association, in the first half of 2023, nationwide commercial performances (excluding entertainment venue performances) will be 193,300, an increase of 400.86. percent compared to the same period last year; The box office revenue was 16.793 billion yuan, an increase of 673.49 percent compared to the same period last year. And the number of viewers is 62.2366 million, which is more than 10 times higher than last year.4 Among them, concerts and music festivals are increasing in popularity at a high level, and the effect on increasing domestic consumption is outstanding; For example, the total audience at the Tianjin stop of Jay Chou’s concert was 185,000, and the cumulative total consumption exceeded 3 billion yuan.5

The summer box office in 2023 was also outstanding, reaching 20.618 billion yuan, compared to a 16 percent increase in the previous summer box office record of 2019, when the number of moviegoers reached 504 million. The single-day box office has broken the 100 million record for 72 consecutive days, a 95 percent increase over the previous 37 consecutive million box office days in 2019.6

As the industry was witnessing its silver lining, laws and regulations in the entertainment media were also undergoing major changes.
